"If Nigerians must choose only a

handful of legislators to symbolize

their resistance to the repressive

attempt by the Obasanjo

administration to extend its misrule

through the pseudo-constitutional

manoeuvres sharply exposed as

"Third Term" agenda, one man who

by popular acclaim would be included

in that hall of fame is Senator Uche

Chukwumerije."

Chukwumerije’s Senatorial Style

Those who know Senator Uche Chukwumerije know that his hands-on approach to challenges has been his definitive style over the years. Whether as Biafra Director of Information and Propaganda during the civil war, as journalist with the Daily Times and Publisher of Afriscope magazine in the seventies; as Minister of Information in the nineties and now senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria since 2003, he has always broken new grounds in whatever he does.

The distinguished senator sees himself both as a representative of Ndiigbo, an ardent messenger of Abia North senatorial constituency and a committed Nigerian patriot. He proves his true commitment to his primary constituency by the way and manner he tackles his duties in the National Assembly. First, he formed the Abia National Assembly Caucus, made up of the three Senators and all the Honourable Members of the House of Representatives from Abia State.

As Chairman of the South-East Budget (2005 Coordinating Committee), he also ensured that political office holders of the entire South-East meet occasionally to discuss the issues and concerns of the people of that geo-political zone. Participants include all ministers from the Southeast. The need to attract federal amenities to the South-East usually dominates the meetings.

Following his election as the Senator for the area, Chukwumerije set up a new mode in political representation by the style and special attention he has devoted to constituency matters. This mode of representation is sustained through the following methods:

  1. Regular interactive ‘Progress Report’ meetings in the five local government areas of Abia North Senatorial District.
  2. Quarterly Briefing with LGA Chairmen and Party stakeholders.
  3. Commitment to community self-help projects.
  4. Appreciable Constituency Projects through Federal budget allocation.
  5. Insistence on getting new briefs and assignments from the constituency during quarterly interactive sessions.

Senator Uche Chukwumerije’s effectiveness at the senate is evident from the way his people have stood behind him and the high approval rating that usually trails his visits to the rural communities of his senatorial district.
