ACHIEVEMENTS OF SENATOR UCHE CHUKWUMERIJE The achievements of Senator Uche Chukwumerije address the three priorities of the people of Abia North –– political, psychological and economic. Political Participation The Senator’s approach is aimed at deeping democracy by introducing a new form of representation. His well-known Quarterly visits to the constituencies throughout his first tenure achieved one goal: ACCOUNTABILITY. No legislator has matched this popular approach. In this second tenure, the Quarterly Visits, suspended by the distractions of Tribunal Sessions and delay in approval of 2008 Budget which will confirm the projects for Abia North, will resume this April. Honour to The Constituency From numerous letters of appreciation from our Abia North and other Igbo leaders, it is evident that Abia North is proud to produce the Senator who is respected all over Senator Chukwumerije has brought more respect and honour to Abia North and Ndi Igbo than any other Senator. He has been nominated virtually yearly as one of the Five Best Senators of each year and emerged as 2006 Best Senator of the Year. He has worn awards (over 21) from appreciative groups than any other Senator. He has through his courageous honest dispassionate stand on national issues (Third Term, Declaration of State of Emergency in Economic Empowerment Senator Chukwumerije’s approach to accelerated economic development of Abia North is premised on three medium-term and long-term goals:- i. Infrastructural framework for economic development This is based on a tripod –– harnessing of our water resources ( With this framework, attraction of short-term infrastructural projects from Federal Government is being vigorously pursued –– roads, water, electricity, agricultural implements, educational facilities and other necessities. Empowerment of Social Groups, especially the poor: Since 2003, several programmes (skills acquisition equipment and provisions of seed capital) have been implemented for widows, youths, farmers and destitute. Human capital development is also taken seriously by the Senator. He writes in a week an average of 20 letter or recommendation and makes an average of 25 telephone calls on behalf of applicants. His office is most open to the needy. From feedbacks, an average of two persons gets jobs through his office in a month. iii. Empowerment of Individuals Empowerment of individuals, as district from social glasses, comes next in his priority. This is the main item in the agenda of this second tenure. He has publicly announced his plan to nurture three millionaires in each LGA within the period 2008 – 2011. The Senator is not given to the long promises of a politician. His word is his bond. In summary, the Senator’s achievements frame a fast emerging new landscape of virile democracy based on: i. effective participation of the people in governance and accountability of a representative to the people. ii. restoration of dignity and honour of Abia north and Ndigbo, and iii. a comprehensive framework that facilitates accelerated economic development. It is a landscape that ushers a new dawn of our last pristine glory.
